What are cockroaches?
Cockroaches are scavenging insects that will take advantage of any indoor or outdoor space that provides them with their basic needs. Cockroaches can move into our homes from the outside through spaces they discover in its exterior, or they will hitchhike moving from place to place in things like boxes, used electronics and furniture, or in bags, deliveries or suitcases. Their many entry points make keeping these common pests out of our homes difficult.
Two cockroaches that live in Idaho and are the most regular visitors of our homes include the brown-banded cockroach and the American cockroach.
Brown-banded cockroaches are small cockroaches, and like other species of roaches, they have a flat oval body, long antennae, and six legs. Brown-banded cockroaches are yellowish-brown to dark brown and have two light brown bands of color that travel across the adult’s wings.
American cockroaches are the largest species living in the United States that enter our homes. These roaches have wings and can fly short distances and they are a shiny, reddish-brown color and have a figure-eight-like marking that is a yellowish color and located behind their head.
Are cockroaches dangerous?
Cockroaches are dangerous and should never be in our Meridian, ID homes. Not only do these pests spread pathogens that can make people ill and cause gastrointestinal problems, but they spread parasites. Another problem with having cockroaches in our homes is that their shed skins and excrement put a lot of allergens into the air that can cause breathing problems and skin rashes.
In addition to being a health risk, they are also damaging pests. When in our homes, they will chew through food packaging, contaminate food, and stain surfaces and fabrics with their excrement.
Why do I have a cockroach problem?
Cockroaches can become a problem in any home. These insects are scavengers and move to wherever they can find access to their basic needs.
Things that often draw cockroaches to a structure or cause them to want to stay include:
- Crumbs in hard-to-reach areas like the backs of cabinets, under appliances, and under large pieces of furniture.
- Moisture. Many cockroaches prefer to live in hot, humid areas. Older homes often provide cockroaches with the moist environment they like.
- Plenty of dark spaces for them to hide during the day and areas of shelter for them to deposit their eggs.

Where will I find cockroaches?
American cockroaches like to hang out in warm and humid areas like basements, kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. Some of the American cockroach's favorite hiding spots include cardboard boxes, spaces under sinks, the back of drawers, and in the clutter found in the bottom of closets and other storage spaces.
Unlike most cockroaches, brown-banded cockroaches don’t have high moisture needs; they prefer to live in dry, hot areas. When brown-banded cockroaches live in our homes, they gather in areas away from sources of water and often hang out in attics, the tops of cabinets, and spaces behind wood trim and baseboards.
