What are boxelder bugs?
Boxelder bugs are insects that are easy for most people to identify. Their most unique physical features include piercing, sucking mouthparts, a black elongated, oval-shaped body, and an orange outlining on their wings. Young boxelder bugs are even easier to spot; while they have similar shapes as adults, they are smaller and bright red.
Boxelder bugs were named because they prefer to feed on the leaves, shoots, and stems of boxelder trees.
Are boxelder bugs dangerous?
Boxelder bugs are a good example of a nuisance pest, their presence in our homes is annoying and unwanted, but they are not dangerous. They don't bite people or spread diseases that can make us ill. Boxelder bugs also don't cause structural damage when living in our homes; however, their excrement can cause light staining on walls or fabrics.
The biggest concern with boxelder bugs is that if any die when overwintering in your home, their decaying bodies will attract other pests to your home that want to feed on them.
When out in our yards, they're not known to cause major damage to the trees they live and feed on, though, in cases of a very large infestation, they can cause some minor damage.
Why do I have a boxelder bug problem?
When the weather changes in the fall and temperatures drop, it causes boxelder bugs to seek warm, safe shelter to overwinter. When boxelder bugs live on trees near your home, the warm, sunny walls attract these insects.
As the boxelder bugs move along your house, they make their way inside through openings they come across. The problem with boxelder bugs is that not just one or two find their way into your home in Meridian, ID. Boxelder bugs tend to move indoors in large and difficult to manage numbers. Once inside, they move to secluded spots and stay until the weather warms back up in the spring. They then make their way back outside.
